Hi everyone, I’m Nick Ohlo! I’m 27 years old, I live in Vicenza and one of my greatest passions is illustration. After attending the University of Ferrara, in the course of Industrial Product Design, I had the opportunity to do an internship as a graphic designer at the studio Lateral, located in Vila Real (Portugal). This was possible thanks to a previous internship experience at PUCPR (Brazil), where during the academic year I was able to learn the language and deepen my skills as a graphic designer. From an internship, the relationship with the Portuguese studio evolved into a contract and for two years I settled in Portugal, where I could simultaneously work and attend the Master’s degree in Editorial Design at FBAUP (Porto). Immersed daily among a thousand types of art, I started to approach illustration, I bought my first Ipad and since a little, over a year I have been spending a lot of my free time drawing strange characters, smiling plants, and cheerful rainbows. At the moment, among a thousand other commitments, I am working as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator at Supernulla Creativo Studio, a young studio founded by myself together with my friends and colleagues Marcello Raffo and Marco Venturi.
WHAT DO YOU GET INSPIRED TO CREATE YOUR ILLUSTRATIONS?
I am inspired by everything that surrounds me and by the simple experiences of my everyday life. During the summer I often work as a gardener at a social cooperative near Vicenza and spend my days surrounded by nature and in the company of colleagues. It is nature and the people around me that are my main source of inspiration, together with the world of manga and cartoons, of which I am a great supporter.
WHAT ARE YOUR LUCIDITY PILLS?
The best advice I can give is to always do what you like. I’m aware that my illustrations have a particular style and that they don’t always find everyone’s approval, but you have to draw and express yourself for yourself! Then if you meet people who like what you do, that’s great, but don’t rack your brain and concentrate on what others might like, putting your own way of expressing yourself in second place.
