WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND?
My name is Stefano Tomei and I grew up in the goldsmith’s shop opened by my great-grandfather in 1930 in Lucca, Tuscany. Watching elegant ladies wearing pearls and corals has always been a habit for me, especially in a shop as ‘old-fashioned’ as my family’s. I moved to Milan to finish my studies in Contemporary Art at the Brera Academy and later – during the imposed lockdown – I found myself side by side with my father thinking of something new, fresh, that would reflect my aesthetics and values more closely. From the idea of the Labyrinth, Dedalo was thus born: a young and inclusive brand that, however, comes from the most ancient roots of my territory, those of the craftsmanship of silver, pearls and corals.
THE CONCEPT OF YOUR COLLECTION?
I have two categories of sources: the old guard and the new wave.
From my father (gemstone expert), from the artisans he has worked with for years I listen to and try to learn techniques, stories and any peculiar jewellery needs, from my friends, from Instagram and from everyday life I try to draw the news to mix these two worlds so close but often so distant. The thing I like most is that I have created a common language, in my jewellery I manage to bring together people over 40 who are looking for something fun and people under 25 who instead want to feel somehow ‘square’.
WHAT ARE YOUR LUCIDITY PILLS?
The moments I take to switch off from the constant stream of social media (I am a Social Media Manager so I spend far too many hours online every day) and to better reflect on what I want to tell people about my work. I love wandering around trade fairs, antique markets or rummaging through other people’s jewellery boxes. In the little treasures that everyone carries are contained stories, people, memories, revenge and defeats. And I love listening to these kinds of stories.
