Art Thou Graduation Show Polimoda 2021

1st June, 2021

The Piazza di Santa Maria Novella in Florence was the setting for Polimoda’s Art Thou, Final Graduation Show, an event-installation dedicated to the school’s best creative talents, marking the return of the fashion shows in presence celebrating Pitti Uomo #100.

The catwalk, winding around a secret garden with sculptures by British artist Rob Mulholland, was accompanied by a symphony orchestra. The event showcased twenty-seven young designers, the future promises of a sector that today more than ever requires innovation and creativity. For the first time in the school’s thirty-five years, in addition to the best students of the fourth and final year of the Fashion Design course, the best students of the Fashion Design Management courses and the Masters in Collection Design and Knitwear Design also participated in the Final Graduation Show. They were selected by the school’s faculty together with Massimiliano Giornetti, Director of Polimoda and Caroline Issa, CEO and Fashion Director of Tank magazine and mentor of the Fashion Design course.

The selection consisted of 13 Italian and 14 international talents. Massimiliano Giornetti explains: “It has always been our ambition to discover and promote talent and diversity in all its facets, magnifying inclusivity and diversity. Art Thou (Be Yourself) summarises all this. With the creations of our best talents, we want to respect and promote individuality. The claim of the self to show itself for what it is. A post-modern reflection on the authenticity of the one. The choice of the self to self-determine by declaring its autonomy of judgement and its personal freedom of expression’.

Farma 282 have selected two designers from those presented. The first is Jianqing Zhao’s collection, which struck us for its use of colour, knitwear and pleating techniques. Second place went to Domenico Orefice, for his use of technical fabrics and the innovative power of volumes through anoraks, overlays and down jackets.

Art Thou celebrates an extremely important 2021: the thirty-fifth anniversary of Polimoda, the 100th edition of Pitti Uomo, but also the year of the restart, after a 2020 that kept us suspended. The school has chosen to come back, respecting all precautions and limitations, to leave its special tribute to the city.
